Gheorghe Jimboiu – a gentle, honest man
The leader of the group [of Brașov students] was chosen by the Securitate in the person of Gheorghe Jimboiu, who was older than the others. The choice was based on the fact that Jimboiu had been arrested and convicted as a legionnaire during Antonescu’s time. He was now a recidivist, according to the Securitate, and putting him forward gave greater credibility to the accusations. The reality was very different. This man enjoyed great respect among the students of Brasov and had to be isolated. Despite the fact that his health was very serious, as he had lung disease and was coughing up blood, he was brutally maltreated by the Securitate and then thrown into cell 4, alone, in the Brașov prison. Without medical assistance, after two years of investigation, he was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment and taken to Aiud, where he died. He was a gentle, honest man, brought up by his mother, a faithful peasant from Oltenia, as her only son, lost in a ruthless and unequal struggle, fought in the service of good and faith in God and nation.
