Gicu Jimboiu – a chosen moral character
In the summer of 1949, those sentenced to one year’s imprisonment and those with suspended sentences went home. Those who remained were divided as follows: pupils to Târgșor, students to Pitești, workers and peasants to Gherla and intellectuals to Aiud. I was part of the student group. I was proud to end up in a prison with only students.
Gicu Jimboiu, the leader of the Braăov student group, was not included in the group. He was intellectually gifted and possessed of a spirit of total devotion. A weakling in poor health, he lived only for the ideal he had set himself to serve. Gicu was held in high moral esteem by the other students in his group. Before we parted, he gave us some advice. At the time, I didn’t think I would ever again meet the man who had made the greatest impression on me during that year in prison in Brașov.
