A martyred hierarch

It was the late winter of 1949. I don’t know if it was a stormy winter, but it was certainly bleak. The faith was in mortal danger. Its disappearance was being relentlessly pursued. The Church, a solid institution of the past, stood in the way of the ‘new times’. The atheist persecution also targeted Orthodoxy, the ancestral faith of the Romanians.
